Bay Ridge Community Information
The Bay Ridge neighborhood in the southwest corner of Brooklyn has the classic look and feel of a New York City residential neighborhood. Defined by its narrow homes in close proximity to each other, residences feature small yards, inviting front stoops and large trees thanks to the immigrants who settled the neighborhood in the 1800s.
While there are some apartments in the area, these quintessentially New York homes characterize this part of the borough.
Bounded by Fort Hamilton to the south, Sunset Park to the north, The Narrows Strait on the west and 7th Avenue and Dyker Heights on the east, Bay Ridge was first settled by Italian, Irish and Norwegian settlers and now includes many Greek, Russian, Polish, Middle Eastern and Asian immigrants.
Because the neighborhood has been settled so long and many homes have been passed down in the same family, the area has a high elderly population. Perhaps as many as 20 percent of its residents are senior citizens. Today, it is a middle class neighborhood with varied political leanings.
While residents often turn to other Brooklyn neighborhoods for entertainment, the area features a few attractions of its own. In addition to many bars and international restaurants along 3rd and 5th Avenues, Owl’s Head Park is a popular recreation area. The 27-acre park has walking trails, the first concrete skate park in Brooklyn, a dog run, a playground and basketball courts.
Residents also enjoy the 69th Street Pier. In addition to the pier itself, there is a September 11 memorial sculpture there.
A public library has existed in the area since 1880. At its current location since 1960, the popular facility was fully renovated in 2004 with new shelves and furniture, better lighting and more than two dozen public computers.
In addition to several New York City public schools, the neighborhood also features St. Anselm’s Roman Catholic School, Holy Angels Catholic Academy and the High School of Telecommunications on the site of the old Bay Ridge High School. There are several other schools in the area as well. Among them is Fort Hamilton High School, build in the 1940s on the grounds of what was once Crescent Athletic Club, a country club for some of the city’s most elite citizens.
With beautiful houses and a generally quiet and homey feel, this is a neighborhood in which the fast-paced life of the big city around it seems very far away.
