Bensonhurst Community Information
Bensonhurst is a neighborhood located within Brooklyn, New York. The area is well known for its strong Italian-American presence, and is often referred to as "Little Italy," though immigrants from many parts of the world have begun to take up residence here, particularly those from China and Eastern Europe.
Built in the 19th century, the neighborhood was named after Arthur W. Benson. Benson was the president of Brooklyn Gas and had purchased this property that was a vast acreage of farmland. Benson divided the farmland into lots for homes, and before the end of the century, Bensonhurst was born. At the time, the homes were large and upscale, some of which are still standing today.
The average value of detached homes in this community is about $688,000, while renters can expect to pay about $800 each month. The majority of homes and condos in the community have three bedrooms and the vast majority were built prior to the 1940s.
This community is an excellent choice for families. The area has a very low crime rate, and is considered to be one of the safest neighborhoods in New York City. The area is home a number of private schools as well as five public elementary schools, three intermediate schools, three public high schools, as well as one higher education institution.
Neighborhood amenities also abound. This area is served by four medical centers, two of which focus specifically on children and families. The Brooklyn Public Library has a branch here as well. Those interested in shopping can take advantage of the great deals offered by some of the discount stores in the area as well as the many ethnic shops that line the streets. Dining is its own adventure, as the community’s eateries reflect the local culture. From fine Italian dining to delicious Russian fare to authentic Chinese cuisine, the only problem residents and visitors to this area have is deciding which restaurant to choose next.
One area in which Bensonhurst is not famous for is the nightlife. Families, seniors, and young professionals that desire a quiet atmosphere in the evenings can find it here. Those who need more activity are only a short train ride away from the hippest clubs the City has to offer, but can return home to a life of peace and relaxation.
